Every year Guru Nanak Dwara hosts a speech competition for children ages 6-25. This speech competition is sponsored by the Hemkunt Foundation of New York and is conducted worldwide in more than 15 zones.
Guru Nanak Dwara is part of the Grand Canyon Zone which encompasses the Phoenix area. This zone has two other local Gurdwaras: Nishkam Seva Gurdwara and Arizona Sikh Gurdwara. The competition helps children learn about Sikh history, culture, and philosophy. There is a local competition for the children at Guru Nanak Dwara before May of every year. The top two winners in each group compete at the zonal level with the winners from the other Gurdwaras in the Grand Canyon zonal competition before the end of June.
The winners of the zonal competition are invited to compete at the International level in their respective age groups. The international competition is conducted during the first week of August each year and is hosted by different Gurdwaras around the world. The website for the Hemkunt Competition has detailed information about the rules and international competition venue at www.hemkunt.org.
